Dog Body Language: Read Posture, Ears, Eyes and Tail

A practical dog body language guide to relaxed, fearful and tense signals, context and safe next steps.

How do I read my dog's body language?

Read the whole body and the situation. A loose posture, soft face and easy movement can fit relaxation; a lowered body, retreat, pinned ears or tucked tail can fit fear. Stiffness and freezing deserve space. A wagging tail alone does not mean friendliness, and a single video cannot establish an emotion or diagnose pain.

Signals to look for

  • Body tension, weight shift and freedom to retreat
  • Tail height and tension alongside ear and facial position
  • Lip licking, yawning or panting in relation to food, heat and activity
  • The trigger, duration and changes before and after the clip

Safe next steps

  • Pause interaction if the dog stiffens or freezes
  • Give distance and allow the dog to choose whether to approach
  • Contact a veterinarian for sudden or persistent changes
